We love Dunes Village, but unless we get a rate at or near 50% off, it is out of our price range, so we’ve only stayed there twice (grand opening special and a recession lowered price).
My limited list of places to stay includes the Caribbean and most of its sister resorts (access any one of their sites and you can see the full list.) Compass Cove is one of the sisters too. But although we had stayed there several times in 2003 and 2004, after our most recent time, Compass Cove got “off” my list because the hotel just wasn’t up to prior standards. It may or may not be better now, I just can’t bring myself to go back when there are better choices.
Other than Compass Cove, I’d consider most of the “sisters” for a future stay. Sister property Ocean Reef has some gorgeous (and reasonably priced) corner “parlor” rooms that have balconies on both sides. DH & I had a great stay in a different room type there, and we asked to see a one of those for a future stay. But the thing that would hold me back from returning there was the parlor room we visited happened to be on the ninth floor. As soon as we walked in, I noticed that the balcony rails were much more widely spaced there than I was comfortable with (as a Mom). We were staying on a lower floor, so it wasn’t an issue, but your floor choice is never guaranteed, and the thought of possibly being on the 9th floor with a small child just held me back from considering that hotel again with DD.
I think we have been back to the Caribbean more than any other hotel in MB lately. We love that it is the last big hotel next to a stretch of houses, but more importantly, next to the Sea Captain’s House restaurant.
Dunes Village is on the other end of the stretch of houses and is newer (and has the indoor water slides).
We haven’t been back to Dayton House for a while, but we liked it, and especially enjoyed the zero entry pool when DD was small. Dayton House is not one of the sisters, btw. I believe it is still an independent hotel (maybe family run?)
You can sometimes get a nice rate at a nice place if you look for grand opening specials. My parents stayed at Towers on the Grove last year in beautiful accommodations for a decent price. And that was how we found Dunes Village. But you are taking a chance.
