SOAP LAKE
Known as Smokiam (“healing waters”) to local Indians, the resort lake of this small town contains alkaline waters with high concentrations of 16 minerals and salts. The name is derived from the sudsy froth on the lake’s surface. These waters have long drawn believers, who claim a good soak relieves arthritis, pso riasis, and sundry other ailments.
WENATCHEE
The sun-kissed Wenatchee Valley be came one of the world’s largest apple-growing regions once irrigation was established here in 1903. Since 1919• Wenatchee has thrown a party for its most important crop with an Apple Blossom Festival from late April through early May. Orchards of apri- cherries, and pears line roadsides, cots, brightening the valley in springtime with pink and white blossoms. Visit the Washington Apple Commission Visi tor Center for exhibits, a film, and a sampling of apples and juices.

SEATTLE
The folk who dwell in this rain-kissed emerald city carry on an open love af fair with their town. To Seattleites, liv ing on a tree-lined hillside—with icy mountain vistas and a backyard of flow ering dogwoods, all within the city lim its of a major metropolis—is living well indeed. To best appreciate the city’s set ting, visit the Space Needle to see the Olympic Mountains to the west, the Cascade Range to the east, and island-dotted Puget Sound all around. This Seattle landmark, with a revolving restaurant and lounge, offers stunning 360° views. On the rare days when the sun splits open the pewter sky, snow capped Mount Rainier makes a grand showing. When “the mountain is out,” as they say in Seattle, the populace is doubly content.
