Seattle is a vibrant community that is eager to help their non-profits and business entrepreneurs. Many people are starting businesses right now, as a way to become financially self-sufficient. With jobs either scarce or low paying, many people are discovering the joys of starting their own business. If you’re seeking a city that is business-friendly, you have to look no further than Seattle. There are local programs that help with merchant funding, non-profit startups, and even technology investment in your company.
Business Funds
Businesses that are eligible for the neighborhood matching funds program, established in Seattle, have to meet certain criteria. Check at http://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/nmf/ to find out more about the possibility of getting funds for your business. Usually, the project has to have a community-focus that enriches the neighborhood to be eligible for consideration.
Don’t forget to check out the local Small Business Administration office in Seattle too. Check out 7a loans with them. Seattle has a keen interest in developing their port more, so if your business can be shown to improve that area, you can also get loans based on that criteria through Seattle’s port improvement programs.
Non-Profits
There are many programs for non-profits in Seattle. There are multiple opportunities to get a non-profit funded in Seattle, no matter what the size. If you only have a great community idea, but feel you’d never be able to get started without some funds, check out what’s available in Seattle. For people who are in between jobs, or not eager to start a for-profit company, the non-profit niche can help them give back to the community as a second career choice. The Seattle Foundation located at http://www.seattlefoundation.org offers grants to non-profits for capital expenses, equipment, and/or operating costs. It is a competitive program, but a great way to get started in a noble cause in Seattle.
Technology Investment
Any projects that help part of the city’s community that have not reached their technological potential are considered for technology grants. The program is called the Bill Wright Technology Matching Fund.

One of my friends out east might be moving to Seattle soon if he gets a job at Boeing and he likes to do something on the side so thanks for putting this guide together as it will come in very handy for him.
Till then,
Jean
Glad to hear that you found the post helpful. You might suggest that he join the local Seattle BNI (Business Networking International) to meet new business owners. The membership is affordable and it could provide him with an opportunity to network with other BNI members in Seattle and pickup some referral business. Here are two links to local chapters:
I hope this helps give your friend a head start and I also hope he is able to start a business that will captivate him as well as his clients!
Thank you very much. I’ll definitely recommend him to join the BMI first thing once/if he gets the job and makes the big move.
Till then,
Jean
